Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Lima
Welcome to Lima: Arrival, Transfer, and First Rest in the City
Upon arrival at the Lima airport, you will be greeted by our Marvelous Exclusive Travel representative. After a transfer to your confirmed Lima hotel and assistance with the check in, you’ll be provided with everything needed in preparation for your upcoming journey.
Use this arrival day to rejuvenate yourself by resting or dine in at one of the many gourmet restaurants throughout the city.
Day 2 – From Lima to Cusco
Flight to Cusco: First Encounter with the Imperial City and Acclimatization
Fly from Lima to Cusco. Upon arrival at the Cusco airport, be met by an Marvelous Exclusive Travel representative. The short drive to your hotel in the historic center will provide you with stunning examples of Cusco’s hybrid Spanish-Inca architecture.
Enjoy your day with some light exploration of Cusco’s main plaza and a cup of coca tea – the local remedy for altitude sickness – while you acclimate on your first day at altitude.
Day 3 – Exploring Cusco
Private Tour of Cusco: History, Culture, and Beauty in the Inca City
Immerse yourself into the story of Cusco’s past with a private guided tour of its foremost historic sites. Start with a visit to the impressive Cusco Cathedral and Coricancha temple. Then ascend above the sea of terracotta roofs as you visit the monumental Sacsayhuaman citadel.
The afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure. Explore new flavors and pick up souvenirs at the San Pedro Market or wander the cobblestone streets of bohemian San Blas.
Day 4 – Start of the Inca Trail
First Day of the Inca Trail: The Adventure to Machu Picchu Begins
The Inca Trail is the same path once walked by the royal Inca over 500 years ago. Today you’ll begin this 28 mile (45 km) hike with a drive from your Cusco hotel through the Sacred Valley and arrive at Km 82 – the trailhead of the Inca Trail.
Take in the landscapes around you, from the terraces in the mountains, to the Inca ruins, to the streams and orchids lining your path. After 3 hours you’ll arrive to Llactapata ruins. Continue onwards through the lush valley before arriving at the campsite of Wayllabamba for a well deserved rest.
Day 5 – Climb to Dead Woman’s Pass
Inca Trail Challenge: Ascend to Warmiwañusca and Unforgettable Views
Today is the most challenging portion of the trail, as you climb 3 hours to Warmiwañusca, known as Dead Woman’s Pass, at 13,780 feet. From the top you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys. The hike ends at the Pacaymayo campsite with views of snow-capped Mount Veronica and a deliciously prepared meal from your camp chef.
Day 6 – Valleys and Inca Ruins
Inca Trail Journey: Cloud Forests and Fascinating Ruins
Today you’ll trek through truly gorgeous valleys into the mountain cloud forest. Highlights include Runkurakay Pass, Sayacmarca ruins, and the stunning Phuyupatamarca, “The Town in the Clouds.” The day ends at the impressive Wiñay Wayna ruins, giving you a taste of what’s to come tomorrow. Here you can enjoy beer, a shower, and a good night’s rest.
Day 7 – Machu Picchu at Sunrise
The Great Awakening: Arrival at Machu Picchu and Guided Tour of the Sanctuary
The sun’s rays rising over the mountainscape around the Machu Picchu citadel is what many travelers dream of experiencing, and today you’ll rise early to hike the remainder of the Inca Trail to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu to witness this spectacular natural moment.
Enjoy a two-hour tour of this majestic Inca citadel and take some time to savor your accomplishment as you soak in the views. Your tour guide will discuss the mystery and skill of its construction as you absorb the magical landscape that surrounds this important ruin. Return to Aguas Calientes for the train journey back to Cusco where your driver will be waiting at the station to take you to your hotel for some much deserved rest.
