Strolling the Magical Streets

Bogota’s Paloquemao Market, abundant with fresh food and flowers, is the second largest market in the city and one of the most important retailers in the country. Some 750 merchants offer an incredible variety of fruit, vegetables, diary products and meats in a labyrinth of stands, though it’s the flowers that stand out. Florists from the surrounding countryside fill their stalls with helicons, carnations and lilies, among many others, creating vibrant and fragrant boutiques that are usually found alongside kiosks filled with fresh-picked fruits that are all but irresistible. After a tasting or two, carry onward to La Candelaria, the oldest part of the city. Here you’ll visit Plaza Bolivar, where a statue dedicated to Simon Bolivar – father of Colombian independence – is featured prominently. Situated in the La Candelaria neighborhood, The Botero Museum exhibits artworks by Fernando Botero, one of Colombia’s most famous artists. Botero’s distinctive «oversized» art is instantly recognizable. The museum comprises several rooms spread over 2 floors, showcasing various examples of his work. As you wander the away from the main square of the district, stop for a refreshment in a café and then visit the Gold Museum, situated in the northeast of Parque Santander. The museum is host to one of the finest collections of Pre-Hispanic gold in the world and is truly a “must-see” when in Bogotá; there are more than 35,000 pieces of pre-Colombian gold work in the exhibit. Rounding out the day, board a cable car to reach the peak of Monserrate. With outstanding panoramic views of the Colombian capital, break for a tasty meal before returning to ground with your guide. After meeting your awaiting vehicle and driver, you’ll be returned to your hotel.
With some time at leisure, perhaps set out to discover Bogota’s Zona Rosa. Found in the north of the city, Zona Rosa a joy by day and night. Here you’ll find shopping malls, designer boutiques, charming cafes and lively bistros open during daylight hours that are among the most popular in the city. In the evening, the barrio transforms into the go-to destination for haute cuisine, culinary delights and trendy nightclubs. Animated and dynamic throughout the week, the festivities take on a new air on Friday evenings when many locals flooding the area to enjoy the nightlife.

A Walk Through the Past

Carrying onward, you’ll next visit the Inquisition Palace, an elegant building that hides a dark past. From the outside, it is easy to be impressed by the colonial architecture, but a walk through the building reveals a museum showcasing instruments of torture that were used in more turbulent times. With an expert guide leading the way, discover Cartagena in-depth and your preferred pace. After the tour, feel free to continue to explore the city on your own, or return to your hotel to relax and beat the afternoon sun.
