On Day 4, rise early to witness the sunrise over Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate, followed by a guided tour of this magnificent Inca citadel. Itinerary
Day 1 – Start of the Inca Trail
Inca Trail Begins: Hike from Km 82 to Llactapata and Arrival at Wayllabamba Campsite
The Inca Trail is the same path once walked by the royal Inca over 500 years ago. Today you’ll begin this 28 mile (45 km) hike with a drive from your Cusco hotel through the Sacred Valley and arrive at Km 82 – the trailhead of the Inca Trail.
Take in the landscapes around you, from the terraces in the mountains, to the Inca ruins, to the streams and orchids lining your path. After 3 hours you’ll arrive to Llactapata ruins. Continue onwards through the lush valley before arriving at the campsite of Wayllabamba for a well deserved rest.
Day 2 – Climb to Dead Woman’s Pass
The Challenge of Warmiwañusca: Ascend to Dead Woman’s Pass and Camp at Pacaymayo
Today is the most challenging portion of the trail, as you climb 3 hours to Warmiwañusca, known as Dead Woman’s Pass, at 13,780 feet. From the top you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys. The hike ends at the Pacaymayo campsite with views of snow-capped Mount Veronica and a deliciously prepared meal from your camp chef.
Day 3 – Inca Trail Valleys and Ruins
Trekking Through Cloud Forests: Runkurakay Pass, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñay Wayna
Today you’ll trek through truly gorgeous valleys into the mountain cloud forest. Highlights include Runkurakay Pass, Sayacmarca ruins, and the stunning Phuyupatamarca, “The Town in the Clouds.” The day ends at the impressive Wiñay Wayna ruins, giving you a taste of what’s to come tomorrow. Here you can enjoy beer, a shower, and a good night’s rest.
Day 4 – Machu Picchu Sunrise
Hike to the Sun Gate: Sunrise at Machu Picchu and Guided Tour of the Citadel
Rising early to make it for sunrise over Machu Picchu, you will hike for about an hour to reach the Sun Gate, where you will get your first view of Machu Picchu.
Enjoy a two-hour tour of this majestic Inca citadel and take some time to savor your accomplishment as you soak in the views.
